Godse extremist remark: Kamal Haasan granted anticipatory bail

Actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan was granted anticipatory bail by the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court, in the case filed against him for his Hindu extremist comment.

"The first extremist of independent India was a Hindu -- Nathuram Godse. It all started from there," the actor had said, while he was campaigning for his party Makkal Needhi Maiam's (MNM) candidate in the bye-election for the Aravakuruchi Assembly constituency.

The remark by Haasan was made in a locality where Muslims reside in large numbers.

His comment created a huge row nationwide and police complaints were filed in Aravakuruchi against Haasan for trying to create enmity between communities.

Earlier on May 17, Haasan had said, "every religion has its own terrorists" and that no one can claim to be sanctimonious.

The Makkal Needhi Maiam chief also said that he was not afraid of being arrested but warned any such action would escalate tensions.

The actor-politician, who had filed an anticipatory bail plea after an FIR was registered in Aravakurichi in Karur district for his remarks, said he had made similar comments in Chennai during the Lok Sabha election campaign but it was being taken note of now by those people "whose confidence is dipping."
