New Delhi:

It's something many women experience but very few openly talk about. Whether you're walking to work, exercising, travelling, pregnant or simply going about your day in hot and humid weather, the uncomfortable rubbing of the inner thighs can quickly turn into painful irritation. Inner thigh chafing may be very prevalent, yet it seems like a forgotten problem because many women endure the pain quietly.

Dr Saguna Puttoo, Dermatologist, Apollo Clinic, says that the best thing about inner thigh chafing is that it can easily be prevented and managed with the right skincare and clothing. At the same time, Deepa Vari, Founder & MD, Adira, says the innerwear industry is finally shifting its focus towards solving real everyday problems faced by women rather than simply prioritising fashion.

What causes inner thigh chafing?

Inner thigh chafing happens when the skin rubs against other areas of the skin or clothing. Heat, sweat and friction can aggravate this condition even further during humid weather.

As explained by Dr Puttoo, sweat can soften the skin and increase its chances of becoming irritated. Wearing non-breathable materials may lead to excessive sweating and further aggravation.

The skin can then start to crack, increasing the risk of infection.

Symptoms that should not be neglected

Even though irritation is quite common, some symptoms should not be ignored as they may indicate an infection rather than simple friction.

As pointed out by Dr Puttoo, redness, a burning sensation, cracked skin, continuous irritation and an unpleasant smell should not be neglected.

Simple ways to prevent chafing

Thankfully, there are some simple lifestyle changes one can make to lower the risk of developing inner thigh chafing.

Dr Puttoo recommends:

  • Using breathable, moisture-wicking fabrics.
  • Wearing comfortable underwear to keep the area dry.
  • Avoiding scented powders and moisturisers, which could increase irritation.
  • Applying barrier creams like zinc oxide to reduce friction.
  • Using ice packs to soothe irritated skin in case of chafing.

She also points out that although there are many home remedies to relieve mild symptoms, one should always consult a physician for persistent or worsening irritation.

Why women want better innerwear

As stated by Deepa Vari, women's expectations of innerwear have changed drastically over time.

Instead of paying attention only to attractive designs, women now want underwear that is functional and addresses issues such as thigh chafing, sweating, breast support and menstrual care.

Innovations such as anti-chafing shorts, longer innerwear and four-way stretch materials are helping women stay comfortable throughout the day.

What to look for while buying innerwear

According to Deepa Vari, selecting the right innerwear has little to do with branding and marketing hype.

Women should look for:

  • Breathable materials that manage perspiration efficiently.
  • Soft waistbands that do not irritate the skin.
  • Enough flexibility for comfortable movement.
  • Proper coverage for areas prone to friction.
  • Quick-drying materials suitable for warm climates.
  • A proper fit because, no matter how well-designed the garments are, they will not be comfortable if they do not fit properly.

Comfort should never be an afterthought

In many ways, inner thigh chafing is not a subject that is talked about often. However, it is something that can affect one's comfort and overall wellbeing on a daily basis.

As the experts pointed out, preventing inner thigh chafing requires making the right decisions, including wearing breathable clothes and choosing functional innerwear.
