Padmaavat set the tune right for the rest of the year with a fantastic opening. Despite protests and disruption by Karni Sena, Sanjay Leela Bhansali's magnum opus minted Rs 19 crore on Thursday. It garnered Rs 5 crore by limited preview screenings on Wednesday, taking the total business to Rs 24 crore.

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh took to Twitter to share Padmaavat business in India. He wrote, ''Despite non-screening in few states and protests/disturbances, #Padmaavat fares VERY WELL on Day 1... Had it been a peaceful/smooth all-India release, the biz would’ve touched ₹ 28 / ₹ 30 cr... Wed [limited preview screenings] 5 cr, Thu 19 cr. Total: ₹ 24 cr. India biz.''.

It is undoubtedly a good business despite non-screening in prominent states and chaos created by Karni Sena. Earlier, Taran Adarsh tweeted the worldwide collection of Padmaavat. He wrote, ''#Padmaavat takes a FANTABULOUS START in key international markets on Thu...AUSTRALIA: A$ 367,984 [₹ 1.88 cr] NEW ZEALAND: NZ$ 64,265 [₹ 29.99 lakhs] UK [preview screenings]: £ 97,604 [₹ 88.08 lakhs]”

Special screening was held for film fraternity which was attended by many celebs. Noted writer-lyricist Javed Akhtar who saw the magnum opus along with wife Shabana Azmi at the special screening questioned protestors. "I saw the film and I feel it is among the most accomplished achievements I've seen in Indian cinema in recent times. I fail to understand what the protesters are protesting against," asked Akhtar. Shabana Azmi was excited after watching the movie and even went on to say that it should be sent as India's entry to the Oscars.

In Padmaavat, Deepika Padukone plays Rani Padmini, Ranveer Singh is seen as Alauddin Khilji and Shahid Kapoor plays Maharawal Ratan Singh. It also has Raza Murad, Jim Sarbh and Aditi Rao Hydari in important roles.

Padmaavat was earlier scheduled to clash with Akshay Kumar starrer PadMan but after Bhansali’s request, the actor pushed the release date. PadMan will now hit the screens on February 9 and will fight the box office battle with Sidharth Malhotra and Manoj Bajpayee starrer Aiyaary.
