Kolkata, Mar 31: Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee on Friday night said that the Centre is considering the demand made from different quarters to withdraw excise duty on non-branded jewellery.

“I have already made a statement in Parliament in this matter. Already responded in the matter...I am considering it.  I have received representations from various organisations, state governments and MPs,” Mukherjee told reporters on arrival here from New Delhi.

He was responding to media queries on whether the Centre is considering withdrawal of excise duty on unbranded jewellery in view of demands made from different quarters and as also the strike called by the jewellers.

The Finance Minister has already promised to reconsider the budget proposals to bring unbranded jewelleries in excise duty net.

Mukherjee said “there should not be and need not be any strike”, making a reference to the indefinite strike by the jewellers in West Bengal.
