New Delhi: Samsung has taken the wraps off of its latest flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S5 at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. The S5 builds upon last year's Galaxy S4 with improved camera capabilities, a new design, a fingerprint scanner, fitness tracking capabilities, and more.The phone looks similar to the S4, but is slightly larger, due to the bigger 5.25in compared to 4.99in screen, and the back is now soft-touch textured rather than smooth as on the S4. The company has chosen not to mention price. The Korean manufacturer however did say the Galaxy S5 would launch in 150 countries, starting from 11 April 2014.Let us take a close look at its top ten features:1) A heart rate sensor The new Samsung Galaxy S5 smartphone is being promoted as a lifestyle product. It now comes with a built-in heart rate monitor which the company believes will help people track their activities and plan workouts. The heart rate monitor works as advertized and is accurate and takes only a few seconds to complete. It is a unique feature in the Android smartphone market.2) Finger print scanner This feature is clearly borrowed from the iPhone 5S. It serves three main purposes. First, it can swiftly unlock the phone, and second you can make instant online mobile payments via PayPal integration, and the third is to protect important documents with a Private Mode that's unlocked by your fingerprint.3) 16 MP imaging powerhouse The Galaxy S5 has a 16MP camera that comes with an LED flash, and Samsung boasts that it has the fastest autofocus around - up to 0.3 seconds. It results in extremely quick focusing with shots seemingly being captured the instant you press the shutter button.Like the LG G Pro 2, the Galaxy S5 also has post-shot focusing, which Samsung calls Selective Focus. Once you get the hang of it, it works well. Once you focus on a nearby object, the S5 takes two photos - one with the foreground in focus, and the other focused on the background. Press edit, and you're then presented with three options - blur background, make sharper and pan focus - which let you focus on the subject, the background or both at the same time, after you've taken the shot.The S5 comes with a live HDR mode for both stills and videos, which lets you see what shots and movies look like with HDR on, in real time.The Galaxy S5 can record slow-motion video at 120fps, in addition to 4K UHD recording.4) Amazing screen While you might be disappointed at the lack of a QHD screen, still the S5's AMOLED screen retains its full HD resolution while getting a very slight size increase to 5.1 inches. It comes with a 1080x1920 pixel full-HD resolution.Some interesting features that Samsung has infused into S5 include the ability for the display to adjust its levels relative to your surrounding lighting conditions (indoors or outdoors) and an extra low dimming mode for use in dark rooms or if you don't want people looking at your screen from over your shoulder.5) It's waterproof and dustproof The Galaxy S5 offers the same IP67 waterproof and dustproof powers as its Sony Xperia rivals. The modifications for this include a rubber seal surrounding it to prevent any leakages. The microUSB 3.0 port in S5 is protected by a metallic silver-effect rubber plug, which could be annoying to open and close every time you want to charge it.6) Great processing speed At the centre of the new S5 is its quad-core Snapdragon 805 processor, which runs at a blistering 2.5GHz. This chip, paired with 2GB of RAM, makes the phone super-fast and lag-free without almost everything. However, it isn't 64-bit – that's probably going to be a feature of next year's Samsung flagship.7) Battery The device offers a 2800mAh battery. Samsung promises up to 10 hours of web surfing over an LTE cellular connection, or up to 12 hours of video playback. There's a new “ultra power saving” mode that will shut down all but the most essential features and turn the screen to black and white, so you can squeak out enough usage to communicate in an emergency. Samsung says you'll get up to 24 hours of usage with 10 per cent of your battery left.8) Data Connections There's both 4G LTE (supporting the speedy Category 4) and fifth generation Wi-Fi 802.11ac and 2X2 MiMo, plus a feature called Download Booster which uses both Wi-Fi and 4G simultaneously to download files more speedily.9) Brand new UI The S5 is launching with Android 4.4.2 KitKat with Samsung's user interface fully intact. You'll find S-branded apps in many places, including the S Voice personal assistant, and Samsung's signature bloops and whistles are present every time you interact with the device.10) Big push to fitness tracking The S5 benefits from a revamped S Health app and new heart-rate sensor on its back. The new S Health app can sync with Samsung's Gear line of wearables, including the Gear Fit fitness band, and it offers guided coaching and feedback while you work out. Developers will be able to tap into the data offered by the service through an SDK that will be out later this year.
