In a latest announcement that tightens its demonetisation policy, the government on Thursday said that petrol pumps, LPG stations and air ticket counters will accept old Rs 500 notes till December 2. The earlier deadline was December 15, a PTI report said.

"With effect from December 3, 2016, old Rs 500 notes cannot be used for purchase of petrol, diesel and gas at the stations operating under authorisation of public sector oil marketing companies and for buying airline tickets at airport counters," a government notification said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi while addressing the nation on November 8, had announced that currency notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 would no longer be considered valid and that citizens should get them exchanged or deposited in banks at the earliest.

Following the announcement, the government had said that the usage of old notes would be allowed at petrol pumps, Mother Dairy and other government milk booths, government hospitals, railway ticketing and crematoria and burial grounds for 72 hours.

The government later extended the deadline till December 15 and also allowed the old notes to be used for metro rail tickets, highway toll, medicine prescribed by a doctor, LPG gas cylinders, railway catering, electricity and water bills and entry tickets of ASI monuments.

Earlier, the government had announced that from November 24 midnight only Rs 500 denomination notes will be accepted for such goods and services and Rs 1,000 denomination note will not be accepted henceforth.

Meanwhile, the toll collection on national highways will start form December 2 midnight. Scrapped Rs 500 notes will be accepted at toll plazas on national highways from December 2 mid-night to December 15.
