Tremors were felt across Kolkata and in other parts of West Bengal on Tuesday after an earthquake of magnitude struck in Myanmar, officials said. The earthquake was also felt in parts of neighbouring Bangladesh.
No casualties or damage to property have been reported yet, although the mild tremors did create a brief panic among the people residing in Kolkata.
According to EMSC data, the earthquake struck about 70 miles east of Akyab in Myanmar. Tremors were felt across parts of West Bengal, including Kolkata, as well as in neighbouring Bangladesh. The German Research Centre for Geosciences said the quake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometres, or 6.21 miles.
This was the third earthquake felt in Myanmar over the past 71 hours, EMSC said. There have been no reports of damage so far.
