S. Nalini, convicted for life in the assassination case of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, had threatened to commit suicide in the Vellore Women's Prison after an argument with another inmate, an official said on Tuesday.
The Madras High Court on Friday issued a notice to the Tamil Nadu government on a petition by Nalini Sriharan, a life convict in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, claiming that she was being illegally detained in Vellore prison from September 10, 2018.
Nalini Sriharan, one of the seven convicts in the former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi's assassination, has been released on 30-days parole on Thursday to attend the wedding of her daughter. Nalini was lodged in the Vellore central prison. The Madras High Court had granted her the leave earlier this month.
The Madras High Court Tuesday granted permission to Nalini Sriharan, a life convict in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, to appear in person on July 5 and argue on her plea for six months ordinary leave to make arrangements for her daughter's wedding.
The families of the victims have been urging the government to not release the convicts in the case.
The Governor added that a decision on the issue would be taken in a 'just and fair manner' and in accordance with the Constitution.
On May 21, 1991, former PM Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated at Sriperumbudur by an LTTE woman suicide bomber, Dhanu, at an election rally. Fourteen others, including Dhanu herself, were also killed.
Congress President Rahul Gandhi, who offered his tributes, said the untimely demise of his father left deep void in his life. He also went back in time and recalled birthdays he used to celebrate with him.
A bench of justices Ranjan Gogoi, Navin Sinha and K M Joseph took the document, filed by the Ministry of Home Affairs, on record and adjourned the matter.
