The alleged mastermind of Bengaluru-based journalist Gauri Lankesh' killing, Hrishikesh Devdikar - who was arrested from Jharkhand's Dhanbad late on Thursday - has connections in the tourist destination of Aurangabad, official sources said here on Friday.
The Special Investigation Team probing the murder of activist-journalist Gauri Lankesh has arrested one person in connection with the case. Rushikesh Devdikar alias Murali, 44, who was absconding was arrested on Thursday from his hideout at Katras in Dhanbad district of Jharkhand, the SIT said in a statement.
A Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Kolhapur Police took custody of Sharad B. Kalaksar from the National Investigation Agency (NIA) early morning, and produced him before Kasbah-Bavda Court Judicial Magistrate S.S. Raul who sent him to police custody till June 18.
Noted scholar and rationalist M M Kalburgi was killed at Dharwad in 2015, Pansare, a social activist was also killed the same year. Lankesh, a journalist was killed on September 5, 2017 in Bengaluru whereas social activist and rationalist Dabholkar was assassinated on August 20, 2013.
Inspired by the Goa-based right wing outfit Sanatan Sanstha literature, the syndicate, comprising 18 people, named Lankesh as "Durjan" in August 2016 and started hatching a conspiracy to kill her, the SIT said.
"During the investigation, it came to light that a gang of like-minded people was involved in the killings of Dabholkar, Lankesh and Kalburgi.", the official said.
Girish Karnad is playwright and actor, director and scholar, writer and administrator, translator and public intellectual, who does not shy away from speaking his mind.
Waghmare, who was picked up by the SIT earlier this week from Vijayapura district in north Karnataka, allegedly told SIT during interrogation that he was asked to kill Gauri Lankesh in May 2017.
The Special Investigation Team, probing the murder, said it arrested alleged gunrunner K T Naveen Kumar, who was taken into police custody on March 2 for interrogation in connection with the case.
Lankesh (55), known as an anti-establishment voice with strident anti-right wing views, was shot dead at close range by unknown assailants at her home here on September 5 last year.
Gauri Lankesh's killers would "100 per cent" be nabbed in a few weeks, Karnataka Home Minister Ramalinga Reddy said on Saturday.
