Pakistan were 6-161 in their first innings at stumps on day one of the second Test against New Zealand at Basin Reserve, Wellington.

New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori starred for the Black Caps, claiming three wickets after winning the toss and electing to bowl, while fast bowler Daryl Tuffey impressed in his first Test for five years.

Tuffey claimed the key wicket of Umar Akmal, the teenage star who struck a maiden Test century on debut in the first Test in Dunedin.

Umar was set early in the final session to post another half-century, but Tuffey nipped an inswinger through the gate to bowl the batsman for 46.

Promoted two positions to No.3 after making 129 and 75 in Dunedin, Umar again made his runs in a rush, off just 48 balls, with a half-dozen boundaries and a slog sweep for six off Vettori.

But he also played a number of sliced shots through or over the slips cordon as New Zealand's remodelled pace trio made life difficult after an uninspiring beginning.

Chris Martin, Iain O'Brien and Tuffey derived little assistance from a pitch expected to benefit the seamers while the batsmen confronted chilly, overcast conditions.

Pakistan made a solid start, with Imran Farhat and recalled opener Salman Butt making an unruffled 60, the highest first-wicket stand by either side in the series.

But Iain O'Brien then extracted a little extra bounce in his second spell, and Butt skied a pull shot to Tuffey at mid-on.

The wicket triggered a mini-collapse before tea, with Vettori claiming the wickets of farhat and Mohammad Yousuf in his ninth over.

Pakistan seemed vulnerable at 3-66, but Umar and Misbah-ul-Haq, who joined the tourists on Monday, to strengthen the middle order and improve their slips cordon, added 53 for the fourth wicket before Tuffey claimed the wicket of Umar.

Tuffey had not taken a Test wicket since dismissing Andrew Strauss for 10 in England in June 2004.

Tuffey then had Shoaib Malik dismissed, the batsman, driving to Vettori at mid-off, before the captain trapped Misbah lbw for 21.
