ISRO just pulled the hot test for their CE20 cryogenic engine at a record 220 kN thrust, and it worked. This is not just another box ticked; rather, it is reportedly a big boost for the LVM3 rocket and a huge step for India’s Gaganyaan mission.
This test happened on September 9 at the ISRO Propulsion Complex in Mahendragiri, Tamil Nadu. ISRO turned to X and shared the news that its CE20 engine, the one reserved for the C32 upper stage of the next LVM3 flight, performed flawlessly at this new power level.
Here is what makes it important:
- LVM3 is already one of India’s strongest launchers.
- But this engine upgrade means it will carry even heavier payloads into space, which is a real game-changer for the agency’s ambitions.
IANS further reported that during this test, ISRO further checked out the LOX Tank Pressurisation Module (LTPM), which they will be using for the C32 stages headed for Gaganyaan. This successful run means they are are getting closer to having all the systems ready for crewed missions.
Sea level hot test back in March 2026
This was not their first go, either. Back in March 2026, ISRO ran a sea-level hot test at the same facility. They hit 22 tonnes of thrust using a nozzle protection system and a multi-element igniter. The engine ran for 165 seconds—solid performance, no surprises.
Testing at sea level is not easy for the CE20. The nozzle has a massive area ratio, which complicates things. At ground pressure, the engine has to handle a lot of stress—vibrations and heat that can really push the nozzle’s structure. Passing these tests proves that the uprated CE20 and the C32 stage are up for the job.
So what does this mean for India and the space tech?
This means that ISRO is moving fast toward deploying these upgraded stages on upcoming LVM3 missions. With the extra engine thrust, those rockets will be able to haul bigger, heavier payloads into orbit, and that is exactly what India needs, both for commercial launches and for the Gaganyaan human spaceflight program.
All this comes right on the heels of ISRO’s other recent success: launching the Advanced Earth Observation Satellite-05 (EOS-05) aboard GSLV-F17.
V Narayanan, ISRO’s chairman, was understandably proud. The 2,367-kg satellite slipped perfectly into geosynchronous orbit—another first for India. Once operational, EOS-05 will be India’s top dedicated imaging satellite in its class.
ISRO is not just moving; rather, they are accelerating fast when we speak of space tech. This successful test brings India closer to bigger satellite launches, human spaceflight, and more ambitious missions in the years ahead.
