Hyderabad: YSR Congress leader Jagan Mohan Reddy's disproportionate assets case began with a petition filed by former state minister P Shankar Rao, who had alleged that Jagan had amassed wealth to the tune of Rs.43,000 crore during the regime of his father Y S Rajsekhara Reddy between 2004 and 2009.Y.S.R. Reddy's election declaration of 2004 included tax returns showing Jagan's assets at Rs. 9.2 lakh, out of a total family assets of Rs. 50 lakhs. In April 2009, Jagan revealed total assets of Rs. 77 crore, and by 2011 it was Rs. 365 crore.Aug 18, 2011: CBI began investigating the case following a High Court order. The CBI officials launched country-wide searches on Reddy's offices and residences on August 18, 2011.August 27, 2011 : CBI registered FIR and cases against him and 74 others under various IPC and CrPC sections for criminal conspiracy, cheating. It alleged that since May, 2004, he had floated a number of companies including Jagathi Publications. As quid pro quo to investing in his companies, investors were given the benefit of allotment of lands for Special Economic Zones (SEZs), contracts for irrigation projects, etc. March 2012: Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) alleged that the state had lost Rs 1 lakh crore revenue through favours granted to land and construction companies by Jagan. CBI report said Jagan's auditor V Vijay Sai Reddy had manipulated the valuation reports of Carmel Asia and Jagathi Publications to enable them to sell the shares at a premium of Rs.350 per share. CBI DIG H. Venkatesh informed the Supreme Court that “India Cements made illegal quid pro quo investments to the tune of Rs 140 crore into the group companies of Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy". In return, they received benefits such as permission to draw extra out-of-norm water from rivers and lease of land.March 31, 2012 : CBI filed the first chargesheet on March 31, 2012 with Jagan as accused no. 1, Vijay Sai Reddy as accused no. 2 and 11 others.March 2012: Supreme Court directed the CBI to extend their investigations to six ministers (Kanna Lakshminarayana, Mopidevi Venkata Ramana Sabita Indra Reddy, Ponnala Lakshmaiah, J Geetha Reddy and Dharmana Prasada Rao), and eight senior bureaucrats.May 8, 2012: CBI freezes the bank accounts of Jagan's companies Sakshi daily, Sakshi television channel and Janani Infra May 27, 2012: Jagan Reddy was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation over the charges of embezzlement. Earlier, AP Excise minister Mopidevi Venkataramna was arrested on May 24. September, 2012: Reddy's bail plea was rejected several times. August 2013: Reddy started a hunger strike in Chanchalguda Jail opposing the United Progressive Alliance's decision to endorse the creation of a separate Telangana state. After 125 hours of indefinite hunger strike, his sugar levels and BP were down and he was forced to end it.Sept 17: CBI filed another chargesheet against Jaganmohan Reddy Sept 23: Special CBI Court Hyderabad grants Jagan bail after being jailed for 16 months.
