New Delhi, Jan 23: Following is the chronology of events leading upto the conviction and sentencing of Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) chief and former Haryana Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala and his son Ajay Chautala:-




June 5, 2003: Haryana IAS officer (now under suspension) Sanjiv Kumar, also sentenced to ten years in jail, moves Supreme Court complaining large scale corruption and tampering of records in recruitment of 3,206 Junior Basic Training (JBT) teachers in the state.

November 25, 2003: The apex court orders a CBI probe.  

December 12, 2003: The probing agency registers a preliminary enquiry (PE).

May 24, 2004: The CBI registers a regular case against 62 persons under various provisions of the IPC and the Prevention of Corruption Act.

May 2004-2008: CBI probe reveals involvement of former Haryana CM OP Chautala, his elder son Ajay Chautala, Sanjiv Kumar and others.

June 6, 2008: CBI files a charge-sheet in the court of Special CBI judge against 62 persons including former CM, OP Chautala, his son Ajay Singh Chautala, Sanjiv Kumar, the then Director of Primary Education, Chautala's former Officer on Special Duty Vidya Dhar, both IAS officers, and Sher Singh Badshami, earlier Chautala's political advisor and currently a sitting MLA.

June 16, 2008: CBI court takes cognizance of the charge sheet.

July 23, 2011: Charges framed against 61 accused. A retired official of Haryana Education Department was discharged.

August 4, 2012: Defence evidence concludes.

December 17, 2012: Final arguments in the case conclude.  During the trial, six accused (retired Education Department officials) pass away leaving 55 accused in the case.  

January 16, 2013: Court convicts Chautalas and 53 others.  

January 22, 2013: Chautalas, Sanjiv Kumar and seven others awarded 10 year jail term. 44 get four years, one handed down five years jail term.
