New Delhi, Oct 10: Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde Wednesday thanked Bharatiya Janata Party leader L.K. Advani for praising the UPA government's rural job guarantee scheme during his speech at the UN General Assembly meet in New York.

Shinde, who was addressing his monthly press conference, said he wished such a bonhomie exists between the government and the opposition when the social welfare programme that benefits millions of the poor comes in for kudos.

"I thank Advani ji for his praise for the (Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act) MGNREGA programme. The opposition and the government should enjoy such bonhomie all the time and good welfare schemes that benefit millions of poor people should be appreciated by all," he said.

Shinde's comments came as a response to Advani's appreciation, expressed at the 67th session of the UNGA Tuesday.

Advani had hailed the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government's flagship programme, MGNREGA, saying it helped empower rural people and revive economic growth.

MGNREGA, enacted in August 2005, was described by the BJP leader as "the largest cash- for-work programme in the world."

He also said that the scheme responds to the needs of 53 million poor rural households by ensuring 100 days employment to them a year with at least 50 per cent of the work reserved for women.
