New Delhi: Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh has stunned everyone by calling for a leadership change in the party. He said that party vice-president Rahul Gandhi should take the charge of the Congress from his mother and party chief Sonia Gandhi.

In an interview to a leading English daily, Singh said that the party will extend full support to Rahul Gandhi in this regard.

"Rahulji should take charge as the president of Congress at the earliest and must embark on a Bharat Yatra as a mass-contact programme across the country," Singh was quoted as saying in a report published in The Economic Times.

Digvijay further said that the Congress was always headed by a young leader and hence it is high time for Rahul to take over the mantle of leadership.

Congress vice-president had last week interacted with party leaders in smaller groups for the revival of the party following its crushing defeat in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections as well as in the recently concluded assembly polls in Maharashtra and Haryana.

According to reports, senior party leader Ahmed Patel, AK Antony, Ambika Soni, Ashok Gehlot, Sheila Dikshit, Veerappa Moily and others who had met Rahul last week have conveyed to him that it's time he took over as the party chief.
