New Delhi, April 16: Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik Monday opposed the central government's move to introduce new laws to deal with federal crimes.

Participating in the conference here of chief ministers called by Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde, Patnaik said such a move was not acceptable.

"The enactment of new laws to deal with federal crimes is not acceptable since the National Investigation Agency Act (NIA) is addressing these matters adequately and no new legislation is necessary," Patnaik said.

"Similarly, no new legislation on the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) should be made without consulting the state government. The present system of the CBI taking up investigation only with the concurrence of the state government can be continued in the true spirit of the federal structure," he said.

Patnaik added that deployment of central forces should be made only on the specific requisition of the state governments.

He said that Odisha was committed to effective delivery of police service to the citizens and is open to good practices and progressive policies which do not impinge on the basic federal structure.
