Breaking from tradition, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke extempore and outlined his vision and agenda for his tenure. He also addressed the people without the bullet proof enclosure. This was a major decision taken by him from security point of view. This was the first time that a PM addressed without it.
Traditionally, the Prime Ministers read out a prepared text while addressing the nation on the Independence Day. However, Modi is known to deliver speeches extempore.
Modi shunned the teleprompter in favour of his oratory skills. He was carrying sheets that only contained bullet points.
According to some media reports, PM Modi had instructed officials not to provide him umbrella cover in case it rains during the speech.
PM Modi reached the venue at around 7:20 am. He was then received by a Guard of Honour from the armed forces and then hoisted the national flag. The speech, was expected to last between 45 minutes and one hour and it did last for an hour.
For the first time, the government has made arrangements for 10,000 common men to attend the Independence Day celebrations at the Red Fort.
