Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress Chief Mamata Banerjee came out strongly in support of Mukul Roy and her once favorite Madan Mitra while waving aside CBI charges against the duo in Saradha scam.

Speaking to an English daily, she refuted CBI's allegations against her party leaders.

Mamata blamed the media for ‘branding' Mukul and Madan as thieves.

“A section of the media is branding Mukul and Madan as thieves. I do not believe it. The party is with them. Those who are screaming should prove it first”, said Banerjee.

She added that just because the CBI has leveled charges against someone doesn't imply that he/she is guilty.

The agency has already filed a 25-page charge sheet along with annexures containing the names of three accused -- Sudipta Sen, Debjani Mukherjee and Kunal Ghosh, the last being a suspended TMC Rajya Sabha MP who had worked with Sen, the Saradha founder.

CBI is now working to decipher criminal conspiracy and the alleged involvement of regulatory bodies which purportedly acted late on Saradha, thereby allowing it to collect massive deposits from gullible investors.

So far, TMC General Secretary Mukul Roy and Minister of State for Sports (Independent Charge) in the West Bengal government Madan Mitra has not come under the CBI scanner.
