Chandrasen Taplu, whose name was in the list of election candidates announced by the Samajwadi Party on Wednesday and was considered the party’s strongest candidate from Agra cantonment seat, passed away on Thursday morning due to heart failure.

The sudden demise of the popular leader came as a shock to party workers and supporters who flocked in their thousands at his Fatehabad Road residence to pay their condolences.

Even party supremo Mulayam  expressed his sympathies to Taplu’s wife over the phone.

Taplu had complained of severe chest pain at around 8 am on Thursday after which he was taken to a nearby hospital. After an initial checkup, he was referred to Medanta Hospital in Gurgaon. On the way, his condition worsened and he breathed his last at Mathura toll plaz.

Taplu, who was twice elected councillor of Agra Municipal Corporation, was also a member of the Agra Development Board. He enjoyed considerable support in Tajganj locality, where his efforts for developing the area were appreciated by the residents.

Times of India cited a senior party leader saying that ahead of the 2017 assembly elections, Taplu had been putting in a lot of effort and was considered the most promising candidate from the Agra Cantonment seat.

"His untimely death has created a vaccum as far as the constituency is concerned. It can only be filled if his wife or a family member is given the ticket," Times of India quoted a SP leader s saying.

Taplu is survived by his mother, wife and two children.
