Since 2009, the 39-year-old Fazlullah has been hiding in the Afghan provinces of Kunar and Nuristan and orchestrating attacks in Pakistan from across the border. Fazlullah has been reported killed numerous times by media, but every time he personally called media houses to deny reports of his own death.  'Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan' (TTP) is Pakistan's main Islamist rebel group.

It is an alliance of jihadist militants that has killed thousands of Pakistanis since its inception in 2007. Its first chief was the brutal Baitullah Mehsud. In the aftermath of the 2007 siege of Lal Masjid, Fazlullah's forces and Baitullah Mehsud's Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) joined hands. In late 2013, Mullah Fazlullah took over as the TTP chief after CIA killed  his predecessor, Hakimullah Mehsud, in a drone strike.
