Thanks to modern technology and air travel the world has become a smaller place. With fighter jets, bullet trains and the impending advent of space tourism, destinations that once took months or even years to reach, today only take a few hours. Whether mining camps at the top of the world, or tiny islands thousands of miles from civilization, the following are the top 10 most remote places left on planet Earth.1. Deception Island, Antarctica The island got its name after a small aircraft pilot misjudged the distance from the land and crashed. Another reason why the island is called Deception Island is because it looks like a normal island but the island is entirely hollowed out from the inside. Once a whaling station that was destroyed by a volcanic eruption, the island is now home to a Penguin colony.2. Kerguelen Islands, Southern Indian Ocean Also known as the “Desolation Islands” for their sheer distance from any kind of civilization, the Kerguelen Islands are a small archipelago located in the southern Indian Ocean. There is no airstrip on the islands, and to get to them travelers must take a six-day boat ride from Reunion, a small island located off the coast of Madagascar. The islands have no native population, but like Antarctica, which lies several hundred miles south, the Kerguelens have a year-round population of scientists and engineers from France, which claims them as a territory. 3. Gangkhar Puensum Mountain, Bhutan As the world's highest unclimbed mountain, Gangkhar Puensum-- or "the three mountain siblings" --is one of the most fascinating places for rock climbers, extreme sportsmen and scientists today. It stands at a daunting elevation of 24,836 feet- and is Bhutan's highest point. Due to disputes with neighboring China, the country was only opened to prospective mountaineers in 1983. 4. Tristan da Cunha, South Atlantic Ocean Tristan da Cunha is one of the single most remote inhabited places on earth. It is located in the Southern Atlantic Ocean and the closest land to the island is us, South Africa, which is 2816 kilometres away. The island is estimated to have a permanent population of 275. Once connected to South Africa by a British transport ship, the only visitors the island receives now are deep sea fishing boats.5. Easter Island, Chile Famous for the rock statues called Moai that dot the beaches, Easter Island or Rapa Nui is found approximately 3218 kilometres off the Chilean Coast. The name “Easter Island” was given by a Dutch explorer who had discovered the island on Easter Sunday. The island is relatively small with a population of about 4000, most of which are descendants of the aboriginal Rapa Nui people.6. Socotra Island, Yemen Socotra Island is one of the most other-worldly locales on this planet. Lying 150 miles east of the African horn, the largest island of this archipelago is only 82 miles long. Due to its extreme isolation, some of the most spectacular flora and natural wonders can be seen here. Unique aloes, exotic birds and dense coral reefs can all be found along the coast of Socotra. But it is most well known for the dragon's blood trees recognizable by their striking umbrella shape. 7. The Siberian Taiga The taiga forests of Sibera stretch over a quarter of Russia's territory. These rarely explored woodlands are as dense as an Amazonian jungle with more than 62,000 sq miles completely uninhabited. With endless miles of birch, pine and unpolluted waters, these forests are known today as Earth's last great wilderness. Winters are long in the taiga, but due to its latitude, relatively mild compared to other parts of the country. This forest is so remote that one family was entirely lost for decades until their chance discovery in 1978. 8. The Amazon Rainforest, Brazil The Amazon is home to one of the most diverse ecosystems in the world but scientists are still uncovering its secrets. In 2011, the Brazilian government announced the existence of a completely uncontacted tribe living in the Vale do Javari reservation. It was estimated that about 200 tribe members had been living under just four large thatch-roofed buildings. A farming population, the newly contacted peoples had been living remotely for centuries in one of the deepest parts of the jungle near the Peruvian border.9. Ittoqqortoormiit, Greenland At 836,000 square miles in size, Greenland is the world's largest island, but its tiny population of 57,000 people means that it's also the most desolate. And of all the towns in Greenland, perhaps none is as remote (or as difficult to pronounce) as Ittoqqortoormiit, a small fishing and hunting village located on the island's eastern shore, to the north of Iceland. The town is part of a municipal district roughly the size of England, but it has a population of only slightly more than 500 people, meaning that each person technically has more than 150 square miles to call their own. Residents make their living off of hunting polar bears and whales, which are prevalent in the area, and by fishing for Halibut during the warmer months. 10. Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station The Amunden-Scott South Pole Station is named after the first two explorers who reached the South Pole in 1911- only one month apart. Since its founding in the 1950s, the station has undergone several renovations. Today, about 50 people live and work at the compound year round. Conveniently located on the southernmost part of the globe, this station receives six months of sunlight during its “summer” and six months of darkness for the latter part of the year.
