Bijnor (UP): A woman was caught mercilessly beating up her 70-year-old mother-in-law and trying to strangle her with a cloth at her home here with a CCTV installed by her estranged husband recording the brutality.

The woman Sangeeta Jain has been arrested on charges of attempt to murder after her husband showed the shocking video to the police.

The video captured on January 5 shows Sangeeta firsthitting the elderly woman Raj Rani Jain and then trying to strangle her with a cloth.

Sangeeta had some differences with her husband Sandeep Jain and mother-in-law and their divorce case was pending in a local court, according to police.

Sangeeta had also lodged a complain against Sandeep under the Dowry Act, according to SHO Nehtaur, Chandra Kant Yadav.

Sandeep was sent to police custody for a day on January 4 on charges of dowry harassment.

Sandeep had a suspicion that Sangeeta used to torture his parents in his absence and had installed a CCTV camera in his mother's room to keep an eye on his wife.

On January 5, he came to know from the CCTV footage that she was "mercilessly thrashing" the old day and informed the police at Nehtaur who allegedly turned him away.

Sandeep yesterday reported the matter to the SP (rural) following which Sangeeta was arrested and will be produced in court today.

Debjit Chowdhry, ADG (Law and Order) said, "We will take legal action against her. Already an FIR has been registered and our police officers have visited the site. We are looking at the CCTV footage and further legal action will be taken."

"There is a lot of infighting amongst the family - husband-wife, mother-in-law and wife - it is a family matter and now police is in the picture," he said.
