Admiral DK Tripathi, the Chief of the Indian Navy, warned that daily traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has dropped dramatically to just 6–7 transits, compared to the pre-conflict average of around 130. Speaking at a naval investiture ceremony, Tripathi said, since the West Asia conflict began, over 20 ships have reportedly been attacked, while nearly 1,900 vessels remain stranded in the region. The Strait of Hormuz, responsible for transporting roughly 20% of the world’s oil supply, has emerged as a major flashpoint.
Tripathi reminds of Operation Sindoor
Tripathi further revealed that the Indian Navy came very close to launching a maritime strike against Pakistan during Operation Sindoor. The operation was carried out last year in response to the terror attack in Pahalgam.
Tripathi said that Pakistan had requested a “stoppage of kinetic actions” just minutes before the Navy was set to strike. He described this as a pivotal moment in the operation, highlighting the Navy’s preparedness and strategic restraint.
During the ceremony, Admiral Tripathi awarded Yudh Seva Medals to two senior naval officers for their exceptional performance and distinguished service during the operation. The awards underscored the Navy’s critical role in safeguarding national security during sensitive military operations.
Trump claims ceasefire request from Iran
Meanwhile, Donald Trump claimed that Iran has requested a ceasefire. Posting on Truth Social, Trump described the Iranian leader as “much less radicalized and far more intelligent than his predecessors” and added that the US would consider the request only once the Strait of Hormuz is “open, free, and clear.”
He also warned that military pressure would continue until his conditions are met. Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, however, contradicted Trump’s claims, asserting that the country is well stocked and prepared for a prolonged conflict.
Speaking to Al Jazeera, Araghchi said Iran could sustain the war for at least six months if necessary, signaling a readiness to withstand international pressure.
Ships stranded, tensions rising
The conflict has effectively halted shipping in the region, with thousands of vessels unable to transit the waterway. Tripathi’s warning highlights the seriousness of the situation and the potential impact on global trade and energy security.
While Trump suggested the US might withdraw military forces within 2–3 weeks regardless of negotiations with Tehran, the situation remains tense.
