New Delhi:

The United Democratic Front (UDF) has emerged as the clear winner in the Kochi Municipal Corporation elections, securing a sweeping mandate across a large majority of wards. UDF candidates recorded decisive victories in key areas such as Fort Kochi, Kalvathy, Mattanchery, Ernakulam South, Gandhi Nagar, Kathrikadavu, Ernakulam North, Kaloor, Edappally, Palarivattam, Stadium, Panampilly Nagar, Kadavanthra and Vyttila Janatha, among many others.

Key wins across central and coastal wards

From heritage zones like Fort Kochi and Mattanchery to densely populated residential areas such as Elamakkara South, Pachalam, Vaduthala West and East, and Puthukalavattam, the UDF maintained consistent leads over its nearest rivals.

The front also performed well in mainland and island wards including Island South, Palluruthy, Thoppumpady and Mundamvely, further consolidating its dominance in the corporation.

The Left Democratic Front (LDF), though facing an overall setback, managed to retain control in several of its traditional bastions.

Wards such as Chakkamadam, Pottakuzhy, Elamakkara North, Kunnumpuram, Kadebhagam, Palluruthy East, Thazhuppu, Edakochi North, Perumbadappu, Konam, Palluruthy–Kacheripady, Pullardesam, Manassery, Nasrathu and Fort Kochi Veli remained with the LDF.

Many of these contests were closely fought, reflecting sustained support for the Left in select pockets of the city.

BJP-NDA improves performance

The BJP-led NDA posted a modest but notable improvement in Kochi. The alliance won six wards this time, one more than its tally of five seats in the 2020 local body elections. NDA candidates secured victories in wards such as Cheralayi, Island North, Ernakulam Central, Thrikkannavattom, Panayappilly and Amaravathy.

The improved seat count signals a gradual expansion of the BJP’s footprint in the corporation, even as it remains a smaller player compared to the two major fronts.

Candidates from other parties and independents also managed to win in a handful of wards, including Ravipuram, Vyttila, Mundamvely East, Moolamkuzhy and Chullickal. Their victories point to local factors and candidate-specific appeal influencing outcomes in certain areas.

The 2025 Kochi Municipal Corporation election has delivered a decisive mandate in favour of the UDF, dealt a significant blow to the LDF’s overall strength, and offered the BJP-NDA a small but symbolic gain.

What happened in Kochi Municipal Corporation in 2020 election?

In the 2020 Kochi Municipal Corporation elections, which had 74 seats, the contest was fought closely. The UDF emerged as the single largest bloc with 30 seats, led mainly by the Congress, which won 27 seats, along with one seat each for the RSP, KCM, and IUML. The LDF followed closely with 29 seats, with the CPI(M) winning 25, the CPI securing 3, and the JD(S) taking 1. The NDA won 5 seats, while independents and smaller groups captured 10 seats, making coalition-building essential for governance.
