Mumbai: Mumbai witnessed the country's longest domino swap kidney transplant of the country on Saturday.
This transplant has given a new lease of life to six end-stage patients.
For a transplant, it is necessary that blood and tissue of a donor and recipient match.
When they don't, the domino surgery can provide the solution. In this procedure, the donor of one pair gives a kidney to the recipient of another pair. The transplant is then carried out in a series, till the last donor in the chain donates to the first recipient in the line.
The six recipients were part of the second domino transplant, registered with the Apex Swap Transplant Registry (ASTRA), which maintains records of such patients and donors.
A media report said, the recipients and donors are doing well.
Doctors say the success of domino transplant will mean that more people, in need of a kidney and those willing to donate it, will register with them.
The surgeries were performed by the doctors from three different major hospitals.
