Chennai : India's decision to abstain from voting on the US resolution against Sri Lanka at the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) is condemnable while the positive aspect is that the resolution has been passed, said a leader of Tamil Nadu's VCK party.

"India's decision of abstain from voting on the US sponsored resolution is condemnable. However as the resolution been passed, Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa should step down from his post or he should be removed so as to enable an independent probe into the war crimes against the Tamils there," D.Ravikumar of VCK told IANS.

He said India earlier -in 2009, 2012 and 2013- voted against Sri Lanka due to the pressure from political parties in Tamil Nadu.

Now that the Congress is alone and the nation is on poll mode, India now decided to abstain as there is no pressure, he added.

He said a country's foreign policy should be drafted in consultation with the Indian state that is near a foreign country.

Leaders of the MDMK, the PMK, the DMK and the AIADMK were not available for comments.
