Ahmedabad, Jul 25: The Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB) has served notices to around 60 industries in the critically polluted zones of Vatva and Ankleshwar in the state, for not complying with environmental norms.

“Closure notices have been served to around 20 industries in the Vatva industrial estate near Ahmedabad, for not complying with the GPCB's action plan on waste disposal,” GPCB Member Secretary Hardik Shah said.  “

The Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) in Vatva was found higher than specified limits. The board has proposed an action plan to overcome problems in the critical polluting zone of Vatva, but many industries there are yet to comply with it,” Shah said.

Likewise, notices have been served to around 40 companies in Ankleshwar for not discharging part of their highly concentrated waste streams to the Common Multiple Effect Evaporator (CMEV) set up in the region.

“We have served notices to around 40 companies in Ankleshwar, which are likely to have high COD levels and are yet to become members of CMEV installed there. These companies have been given 15 days time to comply with the norms or face closure,” he said.
