Mizoram's Minister of Food, Civil Supplies, and Consumer Affairs, B Lalchhanzova, issued a warning on Friday (May 10), stating that action will be taken against those hoarding petroleum amidst shortages in the state. This decision comes amidst disruptions in rail traffic in the Lumding-Badarpur sector of neighbouring Assam, affecting transportation in Mizoram and causing petroleum shortages.

Ramping up surveillance against hoarding

Minister Lalchhanzova expressed regret that some individuals are openly selling gasoline in several places, taking advantage of the petrol scarcity. He mentioned that filling stations remain empty while gasoline hoarders operate in front of them.

Official oversight and appeals to the public

Lalchhanzova announced that district officials, police personnel, and employees from the Department of Food, Civil Supplies, and Consumer Affairs will conduct thorough inspections of petrol pumps in the Aizawl district. Additionally, district collectors in ten other districts have been instructed to conduct similar inspections.

Appeal to the public

The minister appealed to the public to refrain from panic buying during these temporary shortages and urged them to meet their daily petroleum needs sensibly. He emphasised that if people only purchase what they need, there would be no risk of petrol and diesel shortages. Efforts are underway to expedite the repair of damaged rail lines and increase petroleum supply routes from Guwahati to Aizawl via roadways.
