The Maharashtra government has announced that most shops and establishments in the state can now remain open 24 hours a day. This decision was made official by the Industries, Energy, Labour and Mining Department through a new circular. However, businesses that sell or serve alcohol like permit rooms, beer bars, and wine shops are not allowed to operate 24/7 and must follow existing restrictions.
What is the reason behind the decision?
The government made this change after receiving complaints that local authorities and police were stopping shops and businesses from staying open all night. To clear any confusion, the government issued a detailed clarification to ensure businesses can run round the clock legally.
Requirement for businesses choosing to function round the clock
A crucial rule for businesses choosing to function round the clock is that they must provide every employee a weekly break of 24 consecutive hours. This is a requirement under the Maharashtra Shops and Establishments Act, 2017, to protect workers’ rights and ensure they get proper rest. Local administration and police have been informed about the updated rules. They are responsible for making sure the law is properly followed and that businesses operate within the guidelines.
Theatres and cinemas removed from restrictions
Earlier, theatres and cinemas were also regulated under fixed working hours. Now, they have been removed from this list and can operate with more freedom, similar to other businesses. The decision will give shops and establishments more flexibility to serve customers at any time, supporting both businesses and consumers.
