Akshay Kanti Bam, Congress candidate from Indore, withdraws nomination in another blow to party

Confirmation of the development came after Kailash Vijayvargiya, a Minister in Madhya Pradesh and a prominent leader of the BJP, shared a photo of Bam along with a message extending him a warm welcome to the party.

In yet another setback to the Congress party amid the ongoing Lok Sabha elections, its candidate from Indore Akshay Kanti Bam withdrew his nomination on Monday. He had reached the Collector's office with BJP MLA Ramesh Mendola to withdraw his nomination. 

The Congress had fielded Bam against sitting BJP MP Shankar Lalwani from the Indore Lok Sabha seat, where polling will be held on May 13.

Vijayvargiya welcomes Bam to join BJP

An official confirmed that Bam has withdrawn his candidature. Meanwhile, senior BJP leader and state cabinet minister Kailash Vijayvargiya in a post on X said Bam was welcome to join the BJP. "Congress Lok Sabha candidate from Indore Akshay Kanti Bam is welcome in the BJP under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, party national president JP Nadda, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav and state president VD Sharma," he said in the post.

Shivraj Singh Chouhan takes dig at Congress

On the other hand, former chief minister of Madhya Pradesh and BJP nominee from Vidisha seat, Shivraj Singh Chouhan took a dig at the Congress saying the condition of the grand old party had become such that even candidates did not want to be within the party.

Lok Sabha elections in Indore

Indore will go to poll in the fourth phase of Lok Sabha elections on May 13 with seven other parliamentary seats in the state. Lok Sabha polls in Madhya Pradesh are being conducted in four phases. The first phase of polling was held on April 19 and the second phase was concluded on April 26. The next two phases will be conducted on May 7 and May 13. The counting of votes will be held on June 4. Madhya Pradesh has a total of 29 Lok Sabha constituencies, making it the sixth-largest state in terms of parliamentary representation. Out of these, 10 seats are reserved for SC and ST candidates, while the remaining 19 are unreserved.
