Monsoons bring a sigh of relief, but that’s not all about this season. Apart from the petrichor and cool breeze, monsoon brings along a number of bacterial and viral diseases. This is why stomach infection, food poisoning, diarrhoea and indigestion are the common problems during this season. The atmosphere is laden with humidity that serves as a breeding ground for millions of bacteria and viruses. The high humidity in the atmosphere also lowers the capacity of our body to digest the food. This is perhaps the reason why most of the Indians steer clear of non-veg and eggs during this particular season. Let’s study the reason in depth.
Raw eggs, seafood, chicken and mutton are advised to be avoided for health concerns. It is also believed that monsoon is the breeding season for prawns and fish, which is why seafood is avoided during monsoons. Consuming wrong fish can even cause stomach infection. If you’re still intending to eat fish, make sure that you buy a fresh one. Refrain from eating sushi or anything made up of raw fish.
According to Hindu Mythology, it is a sin to kill an animal during their breeding season. Shravan or monsoon is the month of breeding for most of the animals, which makes another religious reason to abstain from non-veg and eggs.
Apart from non-veg and eggs, it is also advised to steer clear of fruit juices, especially from the roadside vendors. The fruits used by the vendors are hardly fresh and long exposure to humid air of monsoon can make them more harmful than good. To avoid diseases like diarrhoea and typhoid, prefer only homemade fruit juices.
