For one scene I stand upon my feet as our onscreen Mary Kom ends up winning a gold medal at an international tournament. But wait, it's not a standing ovation for the boxing battle she wins, it's because of a flash on screen, which asks us to give respect to the national anthem which is tuned right there. I wish I could have got another reason for giving our same respect.

Mary Kom misses many chances and ends up being a commercial entertainer rather than being a biopic. Too much of emotional touch being forcefully put into the flick could have worked, had there been similar amount of hardwork, devotion and to pack them all an intense rough fight in the ring.

Priyanka Chopra Mary Kom

Director Omung Kumar couldn't bring out these essential essence, which earlier biopics successfully succeeded in. It lacked realism; it lacked the devotion, which other flicks possessed. Moreover, everything comes out in a filmy way.

Every movie buff must have witnessed Bhaag Milkha Bhaag and Paan Singh Tomar among others. I don't include any Hollywood biopic because that would take my or any of your expectations to a higher level. However, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag too was made with a commercial approach but it was the realism in the actor's appearance, which in a big way painted other blemishes in the flick.

Mary Kom doesn't have that minimum reason to support itself. Watching those flicks and now Mary Kom brings nothing but disappointment on my face. I expected least things minus melodrama but the flick mostly depends upon the former minus any content.

An initial fight between Mary Kom and a male street fighter still looks believable and that too considering it isn't portrayed in a filmy heroic way to make our female protagonist win.

The flick required some more of those genuine shots but unsatisfactorily it is restricted to emotional ‘atyachar', which more often turns out to be amusing.

Neither the romantic angle between Priyanka and her onscreen husband, who comes out in full support of her, makes me applaud nor Kom's lashing out over the boxing federation underlining their irresponsible attitude towards other sports like this, provokes.

Kom's chemisty with her father is still believable in the beginning when he warns her off boxing but later too is destroyed with an overdose of melodrama again. In a scene after winning a match, Kom stares at camera with her ‘glycerine' face and on the other side we have her once stubborn father making an emotional contact by staring at her on TV.

In the boxing department, Mary Kom's practice session is restricted to couple of songs while her final battle in the ring is displayed with just a little movement of her hands. Discussions and strategies over them are more stressed than their final execution in the ring. Sorry but that too is executed with some filmy drama.

Director least cares about the rules of the ring and takes too much of cinematic liberty to cover up those errors. It may have satisfied the real Olympic Gold medalist Mary Kom but not us.

Two stars for this filmi ‘Mary Kom'.
