After the Labour party led by the Prime Minister Gordon Brown lost the parliamentary elections,  a situation of hung parliament arose. The negotiations lasted for five long days and at last Cameron formed a government in coalition with the help of Liberal Democrats. This coalition government was the first in UK after the Second World War.
