Rakhi is not just about tying a thread around your sibling's wrist. There is something extra special about a Rakhi that has been made by hand, especially when it carries your own choice of colours, decorations and little details. If you are looking for a creative Raksha Bandhan craft that does not require complicated materials, this DIY idea is worth trying.
A video shared by Sharmistha Roy on Instagram through the handle @sharmiscrafts shows how to turn simple pink and off-white threads into a pretty handmade Rakhi. The design combines fluffy thread pom-poms, pearls, green decorative stones and a braided thread band to create a festive centrepiece.
Start with pink and off-white threads
The DIY begins with two spools of thread, one pink and the other off-white or cream. A pink string is wound around a rectangular card to make a well-packed ball. Once a sufficient amount of string has been packed, it is fastened at the center by using another piece of string.
The fastened ball is then groomed and cut into a circle-shaped pom-pom using a circular pattern for reference. The same procedure is carried out using a cream string. However, in this case, a larger pom-pom is formed.
Pile the two pom-poms
After forming both thread pom-poms, the pink pom-pom is placed on the large cream pom-pom.
The two layers are glued together to create the decorative base of the Rakhi.
This simple colour combination gives the centrepiece a soft, festive appearance, while the contrasting sizes make the design look more detailed without requiring too many materials.
Add pearls and green embellishments
Now comes the part that gives the handmade Rakhi its festive finish.
A large pearl bead is placed in the centre of the pink pom-pom and surrounded by smaller pearls. Afterwards, the green gems are placed around the center, giving it a more decorated look.
These decorations are fixed by a craft tool and glue, making the basic thread look like a beautiful Rakhi.
The best part is that this is also where you can get creative with the design. Depending on what you already have at home, the colours, beads or stones can be changed to give the Rakhi a completely different look.
Make the braided Rakhi band
The centrepiece needs a thread band to turn it into an actual Rakhi.
For this, the pink and cream threads are brought together and braided to create a long, sturdy string.
The combination of the two colours keeps the band coordinated with the decorative centre and gives the finished Rakhi a neat handmade look.
Put everything together
Once the braided string is ready, it is attached to the back of the decorated circular centrepiece.
The addition of the backing disc will ensure that the tie is securely fastened and that the decorative element stays in place.
The final touches consist of pink beads and metal spacers added to the bracelet. This adds another layer of decoration to the Rakhi.
A handmade Rakhi with a personal touch
What makes this DIY particularly appealing is that the basic materials are simple, while the finished result looks carefully crafted. The soft pink and cream threads create the base, pearls bring a traditional festive touch and the green embellishments add a pop of colour.
