Kalki Koechlin is entering a rather unique era in the world of fashion, as she dons a white dress made out of plastic bags. This rather unique design, courtesy of designer Naseeb, has been made out of something that people generally consider trash.
The look was shared by Kalki’s team as part of a creative collaboration that went beyond a conventional studio fashion shoot. Dressed in the handmade creation, Kalki was photographed outdoors in the rain, beside a waterbody, with the muted landscape adding to the ethereal quality of the white dress.
From plastic bags to a fashion statement
At first glance, the outfit looks like an elaborate textured white gown. A closer look reveals its unusual construction. The dress features a heavily textured, open-knit-like surface, a dramatic floor-length skirt and an oversized off-shoulder detail wrapped around Kalki’s upper body. The unconventional material gives the dress a sculptural quality while retaining a soft, almost cloud-like appearance. Rather than hiding its unusual origins, the design turns them into the centrepiece of the look.
The shoot was also deliberately taken out of the polished studio environment. According to Kalki’s post, the team first photographed the dress during a studio shoot before removing the make-up and heading into the rain for another set of photographs.
The resulting images place the experimental outfit against a natural landscape, creating a striking contrast between fashion, plastic and the outdoors.
The story behind Naseeb’s white dress
What makes the creation more meaningful is the personal story shared by designer Naseeb. According to the note shared alongside the photographs, his interest in crafting objects began during childhood, when he and his mother would make things simply for the joy of creating.
The designer described the white dress as a gift to his mother and a tribute to motherhood. He wrote about wanting to create something beautiful for his mother, who, as a widow, is limited to wearing light colours.
The dress therefore became more than an experiment with an unconventional material. It became a personal expression of love, memory and creativity.
Kalki Koechlin becomes part of the journey
Naseeb's journey with the dress eventually brought the creation to Kalki. He described feeling particularly happy when he learnt that Kalki had agreed to wear it, especially after returning from Goa.
The actor's involvement also added another chapter to the story of the dress. From being imagined and created for his mother to being styled on Kalki and photographed in the rain, the outfit travelled from a deeply personal idea into a wider fashion conversation.
The photographs capture Kalki seated beside the water, wearing the voluminous white creation while looking away from the camera. Her minimal styling allows the dress and its unusual texture to remain the focus.
Instead of simply presenting sustainability as a functional concept, the designer has connected it with family, craftsmanship and storytelling.
And perhaps that is what makes Kalki's latest fashion appearance stand out. It is not just about an unusual dress. It is about taking something ordinary, giving it meaning and allowing it to become part of a much bigger story.
