Neeraj Chopra competed at the Lausanne Diamond League and finished second with a season-best throw of 88.05 metres. Sri Lanka's Rumesh Pathirage, who won the gold medal in the Commonwealth Games, once again topped the list with a throw of 88.14 metres, marginally better than Neeraj. Anderson Peters also proved his mettle, finishing third with a throw of over 86 metres.
The Indian javelin thrower was set for only his second Diamond League appearance of the year. His previous outing came in Doha, where he finished fourth with a best effort of 85.69m in his first competition after a long absence following a back injury last September.
Chopra has competed only once since that Doha meeting. He claimed silver at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow with a throw of 85.83m, but finished behind Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage. Pathirage enters the Lausanne competition as the leading contender. His performances this year have established him as the strongest javelin thrower in the field and the Sri Lankan will again be one of the main obstacles to Chopra’s bid for a top finish.
The Lausanne field also includes several established names. Anderson Peters will compete alongside defending world champion Keshorn Walcott, while Czech veteran Jakub Vadlejch is also in contention. The United States will be represented by Curtis Thompson and Marc Anthony Minichello. Ukraine’s Artur Felfner and Switzerland’s Simon Wieland complete the field.
Chopra’s previous result against Pathirage in Glasgow highlighted the challenge awaiting him. His 85.83m was enough to secure second place, but Pathirage’s winning effort was comfortably beyond that mark.
The Lausanne meeting therefore offers Chopra another opportunity to improve his performance after returning from his injury layoff. His best throw in Doha was 85.69m, followed by 85.83m at the Commonwealth Games.
Meanwhile, with qualification points at stake, Chopra will be aiming for a strong showing against a competitive field. The Diamond League Final is scheduled for early next month, while the Ultimate Athletics Championships will take place in Budapest in mid-September.
