Sensex Sheds 224 Points; ICICI Bank Worst Hit

Mumbai, Nov 1: Falling for the second day in a row, the BSE benchmark Sensex today tumbled by 224 points to close at 17,480.83 on across-the-board selling as investors remained downcast amid weak global cues.


Interest rate sensitive realty, auto and banking segments led the decline. Some of the metal, capital goods and refinery stocks were also at the receiving end.

Tracking the Wall Street which fell overnight and weak Asian trends, the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) 30-share Sensex resumed lower by over 160 points.

The key index remained in the negative terrain throughout the day and settled at 17,480.83, a fall of 224.18 points or 1.27 per cent. Yesterday, it had dipped by 99.79 points or 0.56 per cent.

Similarly, the 50-issue Nifty of the National Stock Exchange also tumbled further by 68.65 points or 1.29 pct to below 5,300-mark at 5,257.95.

In broad-based selling, 23 of the 30 Sensex scrips closed in the red. ICICI Bank was the biggest Sensex loser at 3.80 per cent, followed by M&M 3.38 at per cent, Sterlite Ind 3.22 per cent and Tata Motors 2.49 per cent.

Market leader RIL lose close to 2 per cent, while Infosys was down 1.32 per cent.

HUL remained the top Sensex gainer for the second day in a row after its second quarter earnings boosted investor confidence in the company. Its shares were up 3.52 per cent.  Yesterday, it had gained 7.38 per cent.

Among sectoral indices, BSE auto index dropped by 1.98 per cent, BSE-Realty 1.87 pct and Bankex by 1.54 pct.

The total market breadth turned negative as 1,609 stocks settled with losses while 1,177 that ended with gains. The total turnover was relatively up at Rs 2,238.26 crore from Rs 2,190.68 crore yesterday.
