Bengaluru: Top industry leaders have said Reserve Bank of India Governor Raghuram Rajan's decision not to take a second term will be "nation's loss" as he brought economic stability and enhanced India's credibility on the world stage.

Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy expressed sadness over Mr Rajan's decision and said the RBI chief deserved more dignity than what he was treated with.

"It is sad that the country lost services of highly accomplished economist at this point of time we in India want 10 per cent growth rate and 10 million jobs."

"India was lucky to have had the services of an outstanding economist like Rajan as the Governor of RBI", he said.

"His performance was acclaimed not just in India but throughout the world. Experts in economics agree on that," Mr Murthy added.

Mr Murthy had earlier batted for Mr Rajan's second term as the central bank chief. He had said t5hat the former International Monetary Fund chief economist deserves at least two more terms for all the "great job" he has done. (Read More)

Similarly, Biocon chairperson and managing director Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw tweeted: "RBI Gov Raghuram Rajan not seeking second term - Academic gain, RBI loss. He leaves a legacy of economic stability."

HDFC chairman Deepak Parekh said, "It's a pity to lose him. I'm wondering what has precipitated this action by the governor. I am sure the government, at the right time, would have considered giving him another two years term as most governors have got."

Former chief financial officer, HR head and board member of Infosys Mohandas Pai said in a tweet that it is a "very sad day for us great talent driven away by alcontents,cronies...deeply concerned."Mahindra & Mahindra chairman Anand Mahindra said he was "saddened" to hear about Mr Rajan's decsion to opt for academia at the end of his current term
