Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday said the high turnout in Thursday's assembly election was not "ordinary but historic". Sarma said the result of this election is "already visible – in the hope, pride, and happiness on the faces of our people". Polling for all 126 assembly constituencies, held in a single phase, ended at 5 pm on Thursday, with an estimated voter turnout of 84.42 per cent, which was expected to rise further. "What we set out to do was not merely fight an election, but to turn it into a movement – a movement to protect our civilisational values, our culture, and our land," Sarma said in a post on X.

"Today, for the first time, our people have come out in unprecedented numbers – voting shoulder to shoulder, matching and even surpassing our opponents in turnout. In many polling booths, participation is crossing 95 per cent. This is not ordinary. This is historic," he asserted.

The CM said Assam has risen above language and caste, and "our people have voted with one clear resolve – to protect our land, our identity, and our culture from illegal infiltration and demographic aggression".

"This is not just an election. This is a watershed moment in Assam's history," he said.
Sarma added that the message is loud and clear: ''Assam will not surrender, Assam will fight, Assam will survive, Assam will endure.''

An incident has come to the notice of the Karbi Anglong District Administration regarding circulation of a video on social media purportedly showing the election process inside a polling station. Taking serious cognizance of the matter, an FIR has been promptly registered under relevant provisions of the Representation of the People Act, 1951. An inquiry has been initiated to ascertain the facts and identify those responsible. Appropriate legal action will be taken against any violations of election laws, reports ANI.

The Assam Police has arrested seven persons in connection with election-related violence at two places, said officials. In addition, minor clashes also erupted at several polling booths in Guwahati, leading to minor injuries to people.

Assam Minister Ashok Singhal has cast his vote for the 2026 assembly elections. He said: "I was the first one to cast my vote at my booth. The people of Assam are going to give a very important verdict today. This will be historic. The way people have supported us, I think this election will be for the development of Assam. People want a safe and secure Assam. We are getting a huge number of votes in the state... BJP will get more than 75-80 seats and with the alliance partners, we may cross 100 seats."

As per the Election Commission of India, the latest turnout in Assam is 59.63 per cent, in Kerala it is 49.70 per cent, and in Puducherry it is 56.83 per cent.

Several BJP and Congress workers clashed with each other in Puducherry on Thursday, forcing the police to intervene and resort to lathi-charge to disperse them.

A 62-year-old man collapsed and died after casting his vote at Vaniampara in Thrissur, Kerala. The deceased was identified as Vinodan, a native of Ramanchira near Vaniampara, reports PTI.

A poll official was found dead in Assam's Sonitpur district on Thursday amid assembly elections in the state. Deben Horo (45) was deputed as the second polling officer in the Naduar constituency. The cause of death is yet to be confirmed, though doctors suspect an underlying medical condition led to it, reports PTI.

Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has cast his vote for the Kerala elections 2026 in Thiruvananthapuram.

As the polling is being held in the Union Territory (UT) of Puducherry for the 2026 assembly elections, Chief Minister N Rangaswamy arrived on a motorcycle at a polling booth on Thursday to cast his vote. As per the Election Commission of India, the voter turnout in Assam is 38.92 per cent till 11 am, 33.28 per cent in Kerala and 37.06 per cent in Puducherry.

As per Election Commission of India's ECINET app, the voter turnout in Assam is 17.87 per cent, 16.23 per cent in Kerala and 17.41 per cent in Puducherry till 9.00 am.

Congress Rajya Sabha MP Jebi Mather has cast vote in Aluva for the Kerala assembly elections. "I have voted. The people of Keralam have decided that it will be a UDF government with 100 seats in Keralam," she said after casting her voter.

Congress leader and former Puducherry CM V Narayanasamy has said that the INDIA bloc will form the government in the UT. "The poll poll started now. We'll be knowing the trend only after 1 om. But the I contacted various constituencies, our candidates, our our workers, the situation is very good. The INDIA alliance will form the government in Puducherry. I request the people of Puducherry, come and vote and vote for vote in the election. They should exercise their democratic right and 100 per cent voting should be ensured by the people of Puducherry," he said.

Former Puducherry Chief Minister and Congress leader V Narayanasamy cast his vote on Thursday at the polling station at VOC Government School.

Till now, Kerala has recorded a 4.40 per cent voter turnout for the 2026 assembly elections.

As polling started in Assam, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma offered prayers at his house. "With the resolve to carry the Lord's blessings and the people's trust, towards a bright future for Assam," he posted on X, while sharing the video.

As polling started in Puducherry, a robot was seen welcoming voters at polling booth. A video of this was shared by news agency PTI on X (formerly Twitter).

Keralam LoP and Congress candidate from Paravur Assembly Constituency, VD Satheesan, has cast his vote at the polling station in Kesari Government Arts and Science College in Ernakulam for 2026 assembly elections.

"My request to all the people of Kerala is that they have to participate in this democratic process. This is their fundamental right and they have to exercise their right. We will come back with more than 100 seats. UDF camp is very hopeful that we will get a wonderful margin, bigger than the 2001 margin," he said.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) will count the votes for assembly elections in Assam, Kerala and Puducherry on May 4. This will be along with those in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal.

The union territory of Puducherry will witness a direct contest between the NDA (comprising the BJP and the AINRC), and the opposition bloc, which comprises the Congress and the DMK. CM Rangasamy is hoping to retain power in the UT for a second straight term.

The contest in Kerala is largely between the LDF and the UDF, but the entrance of the BJP-led NDA has made the poll dynamics interesting in the coastal state. Under CM P Vijayan's leadership, the LDF seeks a third consecutive term, while the UDF hopes to make a comeback to power.

The BJP-led NDA, under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's leadership, is looking to retain power in the state for a third straight term, while the Congress has fielded Gaurav Gogoi, the son of former CM Tarun Gogoi, to wrest control of the state. 

The polling for the 2026 assembly elections will begin at 7 am in Assam, Kerala and the union territory (UT) of Puducherry. The polling in Assam will be held till 5 pm, while that in Kerala and Puducherry will continue till 6 pm.
