Shillong: Meghalaya High Court yesterday directed the state government to release a visually-impaired man, Lackson S Sangma, arrested along with 25 other volunteers of Garo Hills State Movement Committee (GHSMC) during a statehood demonstration last month.

Justice S R Sen, while expressing displeasure over the failure of the police to produce the victim in court today, directed the police to hand over Sangma to his guardians.

“After release of the accused, he be handed over to his guardians as he is visually a challenged person as alleged by the petitioner's counsel,” Justice Sen said in the order.

The Superintendent of Police, West Garo Hills district, Mukesh Singh and the state prosecution were also directed to submit the report whether Sangma has been released or not on October 22.

Sangma was arrested on September 11 from Tura government college hostel and was one amongst 25 volunteers of the GHSMC arrested for allegedly attacking the Deputy Commissioner's office.

Sangma was shifted from Tura district jail to Jowai district jail during the detention period, the police said adding he was released on bail pending ‘some formalities'.
