A day after a portion of the Nanda Devi glacier possibly burst through its banks at Joshimath, triggering an avalanche and a deluge that rippled through the Alaknanda river system in the upper reaches of the Himalayas, multiple agencies coordinated efforts to search for survivors.
At least 15 people lost their lives and 170 are still missing after a glacier broke at Joshimath in Uttarakhand's Chamoli district triggered massive flooding of the Alaknanda and Dhauliganga rivers on Sunday, news agency ANI reported. Many villages were evacuated as floods swept away five bridges, damaged homes and the nearby NTPC power plant, and washed away a hydropower project near Rishiganga. National and state disaster response teams along with teams from the ITBP are engaged in the rescue operations. The Army has sent six columns and the Navy seven diving teams.
BJP leader Uma Bharti Sunday said the Uttarakhand flood tragedy triggered by a glacier burst is a matter of concern as well as a warning, and added that as a minister she had spoken against having any power project on the Ganga and its major tributaries.
A team of scientists, flown to Dehradun after the glacier burst in Uttarakhand, left for the Joshimath area on Monday for surveillance and reconnaissance.
