After consuming the liquor, some people were admitted to the community health centre from where they were sent to Lala Lajpat Rai Hospital. During treatment, two persons died, while two others are in serious condition.
An inquiry into the incident was ordered by Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, while two excise officials of the district were suspended.
According to police, the victim labourers of Salmira tea estate, fell ill after they drank the illicit brew Thursday night.
The SIT has been constituted to make an in-depth enquiry into the tragedy that struck Saharanpur and Kushinagar districts in the state last week, said an official spokesperson.
Four people have been detained so far, though the main accused Shyam Balak is still absconding, an official said.
"The deaths had taken place in Danwar village falling under the police station area late last night" DIG, Shahabad Range, Mohd Rehman said.
