A record 200,000 pilgrims from India are going to perform Haj this year, after the third consecutive increase in India's Haj quota. The decision was announced when Saudi Crown Prince Mohamed bin Salman, popularly referred to as MBS, visited India in February 2019. His state visit was nothing short of historic as it signalled a growing strategic convergence between Riyadh and Delhi.
"The number of women Haj pilgrims going without mehram (male companion) has increased this year and stood at 2,340. Around 48 per cent of the two lakh Haj pilgrims from India are women," the minister informed.
The Ministry of Minority Affairs will depute 638 officials to the Consulate General of India in Jeddah while the Consulate General will engage an equal number of personnel temporarily.

This year, the Haj quota for India -- home to the world's third largest Muslim population -- was increased to 170,025, of which 125,025 was allocated to the Haj committee and 45,000 to the privater tour operators.
