The demand for power has risen in April due to heatwave and people in different parts of the country are facing power cuts.
Various states continued to reel under power shortages on Apr 29 with soaring mercury pushing the demand higher, as opposition parties blamed the Centre for coal shortages at thermal plants.
Punjab's Power Minister Harbhajan Singh has blamed the previous governments for not upgrading power plants in the state.
Joshi had earlier in the day held a review meeting with CMD of Central Coalfields Ltd and other senior officials and carried out a detailed discussion on further increasing coal production and offtake from CCL.
The ministry added that the coal supply to thermal plants is increasing in tandem with an increase in demand for power.
There is a possible power shortage in states like- Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Tamil Nadu.
Global thermal coal prices have remained elevated as a fallout of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, which disrupted trade flows and crippled supply amid additional demand from Europe, which has now sanctioned Russian coal.
The coal ministry on Friday said it has taken various measures, including diverting the output from captive coal mines, to augment fuel supply to the power sector.
"The Centre is fulfilling all the demands required by the states. Coal stocks have started increasing in the last four days," sources said.
The development assumes significance in the wake of the country's power plants grappling with coal shortages in the country at a time when the festival season has already begun.
Supply of coal to the power sector by state-owned Coal India Limited (CIL) declined by 2.6 per cent to 80.9 million tonnes in the first two months of the ongoing fiscal, government data showed.
