With Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray also absent due to injuries, the top-ranked Nadal's withdrawal on Monday left Federer as the only member of men's tennis' 'big-four' in the tournament.
The prestigious season-ending event, which Nadal has yet to conquer, has never been held on clay since its commencement in 1970.
Federer broke Sock, who was making his debut at the tournament, in the very first game, hitting a backhand winner to take the 1-0 lead.
The tournament also trialled new rules, including shortened sets, no-Ad scoring, shot clocks, Hawk-Eye line calls, and no lets on serve.
The 25-year-old American turned things around at the end of the season as he ended up earning a debut appearance at the ATP Finals, starting with a match against 19-time major champion Roger Federer on Sunday in London.
The inaugural Next Gen Finals starts on Tuesday in Milan and features the top seven 21-and-under players in the rankings plus one Italian wild card.
