New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today launched a scathing attack on the Congress party for not allowing the Parliament to function. He said that the opposition party should adopt a new year's resolution that it 'will let the House function in 2016'.
"It is unfortunate in this country that our Parliament where laws are made, it is not being allowed to run. Those who have enjoyed power for 50-60 years, they have no right to destroy Parliament, to stop functioning of Parliament," Modi said at a public meeting in Noida after launching the Delhi-Meerut Expressway.
Asking the Congress not to create hurdles in the country's development, he said, "They should know better what is the role of government and how it should function. It is their responsibility not to let their political compulsions come in the way of development of the country."
Modi further said that the tactics adopted by the Congress party to disrupt proceedings in Parliament were aimed at 'destroying the temple of democracy'.
"Those rejected by the people have held Parliament to ransom. They don't let in function. We may not be allowed to speak in Lok Sabha but I want to say this in a Jan Sabha, that we have been sent to Parliament to debate and discuss and to decide after discussion. We should give priority to the work that we are expected to do," he said.
"I urge all political parties, especially to those who ruled for 50-60 years, that the people of India have elected us to discuss, debate, deliberate in Parliament. It is our duty. Let Parliament function and work for the benefit of poor," he added.
The Winter Session of Parliament, which concluded on December 23, was a 'virtual washout' because the Congress-led opposition did not allow both the Houses to function properly with daily disruptions becoming a norm.
Crucial bills, including those on the Goods and Services Tax and Protection of Whistleblowers, have been held up as a result.
