Kolkata, Jun 2: Around 15.96 per cent polling was recorded in the first two hours of voting for the bypoll to the Howrah Lok Sabha seat in West Bengal being held today, an election official said.

Chief Election Officer Sunil Gupta said the polling started at 7 AM and was being conducted peacefully.

The election has been necessitated by the death of Trinamool Congress MP Ambika Banerjee.

Being held in the aftermath of the Saradha chitfund scam which has defrauded thousands of investors, the polls assume importance as a pointer to the upcoming panchayat elections.

The main contest will be a triangular one between the TMC, Congress and the CPI(M) though there are 13 candidates in the fray.
