Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said that Assam has witnessed remarkable development over the last ten years and expressed confidence that the people of the state are set to bless the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) once again. Addressing a public gathering in Gogamukh, he said the enthusiasm among citizens clearly reflected their support for continued growth and stability.
The Prime Minister reiterated that this election would shape the vision of a developed India. "This time election is to be make Viksit Bharat (Developed India)... The BJP will form the government again in Assam and make a hat-trick," he added. His comments came as the party intensified its campaign efforts across the state for the upcoming Assembly elections scheduled to take place on April 9.
PM Modi lashes out at Congress
In a sharp attack on the Congress leadership, PM Modi said the people of Assam are ready to reject the party once again. He added that the coming election would give the NDA a clear hat-trick, while the Congress is staring at both a hat-trick of defeat and a "century of defeats" for its "self-proclaimed prince."
PM Modi told the gathering that the overwhelming turnout itself reflects the public mood in favour of the NDA government. "After the announcement of the Assam election, this is my first public meeting. This ocean of people is proof that winning the election for the third time is certain," he said. He reminded the audience that he himself had secured a hat-trick in becoming Prime Minister and hoped their blessings would deliver another hat-trick for the BJP in Assam.
PM lists major promises from BJP manifesto
The Prime Minister outlined the key welfare measures promised in the BJP manifesto for the Assembly polls. He said over 15 lakh families in Assam would benefit from the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana and assured that every family that is yet to receive a pucca house will be covered. He added that poor families will get "free education from KG to PG", emphasising a significant push towards educational upliftment.
Focus on women’s empowerment
Highlighting women-centric welfare efforts, PM Modi said that nearly 3 lakh women in Assam have already become "Lakhpati Baideo" through the Lakhpati Didi scheme. He announced that the NDA aims to expand this to 40 lakh women in the coming years. He also mentioned that the Orunodoi scheme will receive further enhancements to ensure wider benefits.
Assam Assembly elections 2026
The polling for all 126 Assembly constituencies will be held in a single phase on April 9, while the counting of votes is scheduled for May 4. Assam will witness a fight between the incumbent BJP-led NDA government and Congress for the 126-seat assembly. The BJP is contesting the elections with Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland People's Front (BPF). The NDA is looking to secure a third consecutive term, while the Congress aims to defeat the ruling party to return to power.
