A delegation from the Congress party on Friday visited the Iran Culture House in New Delhi and met the representative of Iran’s Supreme Leader in India. During the meeting, the delegation expressed deep sorrow over the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei.
Senior Congress leaders Salman Khurshid and Pawan Khera were among those present in the delegation. They conveyed their condolences and extended sympathies during the interaction with the Iranian representative.
India condoles Khamenei’s demise
India’s Foreign Secretary, Vikram Misri, on Thursday signed a book of condolence at the Iranian embassy on behalf of the Indian government, following the death of Iran’s former Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei.
The move came at a time when New Delhi chose not to make a direct statement on the killing of Khamenei. Instead, the government reiterated its long‑standing position that the ongoing crisis in West Asia should be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy.
Khamenei’s killing amid Middle East unrest
Ali Khamenei died on February 28 in Tehran, Iran. He was 86 years old and had served as Iran’s Supreme Leader since 1989, making him one of the longest-serving leaders in the Middle East.
His death happened during a major military attack on Iran. The United States and Israel carried out coordinated airstrikes targeting Iranian government and military leadership locations in Tehran. One of the strikes hit the compound where Khamenei was located, and he was killed in that attack along with several other officials.
The Iranian government officially confirmed his death on March 1, and the country announced a 40-day national mourning period. Funeral ceremonies were planned in Tehran and later in his hometown, Mashhad.
