    Terrorist associate arrested in J&K

    Mohammed (JeM) has been arrested in a joint operation by the police, CRPF and army at Awantipora in Jammu and Kashmir, officials said on Saturday.

    Police said Awantipora Police along with Army's 55 RR and 185 Bn of the CRPF arrested a terrorist associate linked with the proscribed terror outfit JeM in Awantipora. He has been identified as Umer Farooq Bhat. 

    Incriminating materials including a hand grenade has been recovered from his possession.

     The iconic hymn 'Abide with Me', which was the key part of the Beating Retreat ceremony post Republic Day, has been dropped this year. The hymn, known to be Mahatma Gandhi's favourite, triggered controversy in 2020 when it did not appear in the list of tunes.

    'Abide with Me' is a military tune played after bugle was made to announce post sunset let's pick up injured and dead. It was mutually accepted war discipline across the world. The tune 'Abide with Me' was played by military bands when the warriors were collecting their bravehearts

    Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Saturday criticized the 'extinguishing' of Amar Jawan Jyoti at the India Gate and merging it with the National War Memorial flame and said that the rationale is beyond anyone's comprehension.

    "If two different flames kept burning in the honour of the martyrs, then where was the problem for the Modi government? It is an insult to martyrdom to extinguish the Amar Jawan Jyoti, which has been paying homage to the martyrs for 50 years," he said.

    Kerala nun rape case: Prosecution to appeal against acquittal of Mulakkal

    The prosecution which was in a state of shock when it heard a lower court acquitting Catholic Bishop Franco Mulakkal in the nun rape case, on Saturday decided to appeal the verdict at the Kerala High Court.

    The special prosecutor in the case Jithesh Babu submitted the legal advice to this effect to the Kottayam SP, who will go forward in the appeal, as the time period for it is 90 days, from the date of the verdict which came from the Kottayam Additional district court judge G. Gopakumar on January 14, whose verdict enabled Franco to walk out free.

    World Bank approves loan of $125mn to Bengal govt

    In a significant recognition to the social welfare schemes launched by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, the World Bank has approved a loan of $125 million (nearly Rs 1,000 crore) for inclusive social protection.

    On Saturday, in a press statement, the state government announced that the World Bank on January 19 in recognition of these efforts of the state government has sanctioned $125 million (about Rs 1,000 crore) loan to the West Bengal government to support the state's effort to help the poor and vulnerable groups access social protection services. Mamata Banerjee's earnest endeavour to identify the problems of the weaker sections of the society and redress them has paid a huge dividend, the statement read.

    Prez, PM condole deaths in Mumbai building fire

    President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday condoled the death of three persons in the huge fire in Mumbai. Taking to Twitter in Hindi, President Kovind said he is saddened by the fire incident and expressed deepest sympathies with the families who lost their near and dear ones in the fire. He also prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured.

    At least 6 persons have been killed and 23 others injured when a major blaze engulfed the 18th floor of a building in Tardeo, South Mumbai at dawn on Saturday.

    Maharashtra: Naxals torch 11 tractors, machinery engaged in road construction work

    A group of Naxals allegedly set on fire 11 tractors and two JCB machines engaged in road construction work in Gadchiroli district of Maharashtra, police said on Saturday. The incident took place at Irapnagar village in Bhamragadh tehsil around 2 pm on Friday, during which they also torched one Poclain machine, a senior police official said. "Around 40 to 50 Naxals were involved in the incident. They are Dalam and militia members," he said. The burnt vehicles and other machinery belonged to different contractors involved in the road construction work, he added. According to the official, police have registered an offence and launched a probe.

    Earthquake jolts J&K's Doda region

    An earthquake of 4.0 magnitude hit Jammu and Kashmir's Doda district in the early hours of Saturday, an official said. The quake occurred at 2.53 am. There are no immediate reports of any damage, Director Disaster Management Aamir Ali said. He said the epicentre of the tremor was 10 kilometres below the surface of the earth in the Doda region.

    Andhra HC chief justice inaugurates special POCSO court in Krishna district

    Andhra Pradesh High Court Chief Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra Friday inaugurated a special court for the trial of offences under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act at Machilipatnam in Krishna district. The special court is located on the district court premises. High Court judges justices M Sathyanarayana Murthy, K Vijayalakshmi, Battu Devanand and Asanudin Amanulla accompanied the chief justice in the virtual programme. Krishna district Court Principal Judge G Ramakrishna and other Judges and Lawyers were also present.

    Panic eases out in border belt of Kathua after farmland hole found not to be cross-border tunnel

    Panic gripped the border area of Jammu and Kashmir's Kathua district for a brief while Friday evening after BSF troops detected a big hole in a farmland near the International Border (IB), presuming it to be cross-border tunnel, sources said. However, it turned out to a hole or pit caused by rains, they said. A big hole in a farmland was detected by troops during a routine search operation in the farmland in Karol Krishna area in the district, they said. Top BSF, police and other agencies rushed to the spot and discovered that it was not a tunnel but only a big hole or pit caused most probably due to rains, they said. "We suffered panic and thought a cross-border tunnel was detected. Top officials rushed to the spot. They used bulldozers to dig the area and found out it was just a hole not a tunnel," a local villager said.
